Make your own wedding rings, here in Yorkshire.
Did you know you can come and make your very own wedding rings here at The Jewellery Makers?
A perfect way to start your journey in married life.
Make your wedding bands in silver or gold. Our day together will enable you to make simple rings with a texture if you wish or a curved shape to fit around an engagement ring. If you would like to work with another metal or have a more complex idea with stones set in the band, drop us an email to ask any questions, we can help but longer projects take more time and we may need to make a plan for you to do more time or for us to do some of the finishing work for you. Get in touch HERE.
Will I be able to make a perfect wedding band?
You could make each others rings, something to cherish forever. You will be amazed with what you can and will create with our expert tuition to guide you. We will hold your hand every step of the way and ensure you leave with perfect wedding rings.
How do I book a course to make my own wedding rings?
This workshop can be booked at your convenience (around our regular classes). We can offer these sessions Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturdays during the daytime. Get in touch to discuss dates before you book or, if you are keen to book, go ahead and then give us a shout to work out the finer details. Dates are only secured with a booking. Get in touch HERE.
How much will it cost, in materials, to make my own wedding band?
Materials are not included, if you know what you need please let us know and we will send you a quote, or ask us about a consultation so we can help you to decide what you want for your wedding band. You can either meet us on zoom, or come into the studio to try on our selection of wedding bands and show us your engagement ring.
We will need to ideally order your metal a minimum of 1 month before your workshop to allow for delivery and hallmarking before you arrive to make your rings.
As a very rough guide: enough 9ct gold to make a slim (but still sturdy) band starts at about £200, for a man's heavy ring in 18ct gold can be over £1,000, silver can be £10. Prices for gold are volatile and change twice a day so we would need to quote based on your needs for every individual order.
Can I use my family gold to make my own wedding ring?
Yes you absolutely can use your own gold to make your wedding bands! We can help you melt down and use your gold, or we can do that for you in advance of your workshop, here in our jewellery workshops in Leeds. It would mean paying for some extra time but the saving on material can be substantially more.
The beauty of this process is about more than money though, you are taking the sentiment from your old jewellery, often passed down from family, into your future with you. We love to work with sentimental gold. Let us know if you would like to do this, we will need to see what gold you have to advise you on how best to use it for your make.
Can I use my old jewellery or white gold to make a yellow gold ring?
We can even use your broken or worn out jewellery, or gold that is a different colour or quality that the gold you want to have in your wedding bands. We work with a partner to extract the fine gold and realloy it to the colour and carat you want. Want 18ct yellow gold but have a load of 9ct white gold you no longer wear? Not a problem!
How does hallmarking work?
A hallmark is a series of at least 4 stamps that provide evidence and reassurance of the quality of the metal that your jewellery is made from, it also contains other information.
- The maker's mark - who has sent it for Assay
- The office where the metal was tested and Assayed
- The metal that the metal tested as
- The year it was presented for Assaying.
There are 4 Assay Offices in the UK and each piece of jewellery must be posted to one of those 4 offices, tested, stamped (or lasered) with the stamps, and returned. Each goldsmith is registered with an office. The maker's mark on your rings, will be Emma's (unless you wish to register with an office) and her Assay Office is Edinburgh, so there will be a tiny castle stamped on the inside of your ring, alongside the other three stamps.
Assaying costs £60 if your rings are made from the same metal, or £60 each if they are different metals. This includes special delivery postage both ways. Ideally this would be done before the rings are made, if it is done afterwards they will have to be lasered instead of stamped which is a little more expensive and slower.
Hallmarking is a legal requirement for jewellery sellers, but as you are not selling your rings, but making them for own personal use, you can choose to forgo it. However if you ever did want to sell them or have them remodelled you may have to pay for testing at that time. We would always advise you have gold jewellery hallmarked.
Any other details?
Lunch will be provided along with tea and coffee and a bottle of Prosecco once you're finished. £400 per session plus materials per couple or come on your own if you prefer (this will be around 6 hours)
Additional charges may apply for refining metal, if you are using your own gold, hallmarking or if you need us to set stones into them.
Please do get in touch before purchasing so we can discuss your ideas and make sure you get exactly what you want. Get in touch HERE.
